FAB FIVE: 'Teach Me to Write Well' Tools

5/21/2014

I used to believe I needed a MFA to be taken seriously by a publisher. I have since learned what publishers and editors really care about is a well crafted WIP.

Where do we go to learn to write a tale worth calling in sick to work because we read till the sun came up. What? You know it's happened.

Between working, feeding the family, sleep and maybe a shower, do we have time to take classes? Perhaps not, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hone our craft, learn from masters and become better at what we do.

Today's FAB FIVE are books that took my writing to the next level. Read one and see if your writing changes.

1) Save The Cat - This is a book about screenwriting, but has an amazing way of breaking down the scenes of fiction and teach pacing.

2) The Productive Writer - Took me from being afraid of FaceBook to a platform building maniac. Great place to start, or gain focus.

3) The Writer's Little Helper - I loved this smart book on all aspects of writing. Each lesson is broken down into 2-3 pages with easy to follow steps.

4) The Manuscript Makeover - I read this after writing my first book, then went back and wrote the entire thing over again. Save yourself some time and read this first.

5) Stephen King's On Writing - Before I ever thought to write a book, I read this by Mr. King. It was the first time I realized writer's were not celestial beings who'd fallen from the sky, but were people who studied a craft I'd been in love with since my first day of school. That was when I knew I would write.

Each one of these books took my writing to a new level and gave me tools to create even better work than I had before. Read one and see if your writing gets better.

Which books have helped kick you writing in the literary pants? List it in the comments below.
