Writers’ tools I love…My top five reference books essential for every desk…

1) Flip Dictionary - Barbara Ann Kipfer
For "when you know what you want to say but can't think of the right word"
2) Body trauma A writers guide to wounds and injuries
Because we are not all doctors.
3) 6000 Baby Names and Origins
I actually use two baby name books. An old one from the 70's and a newer one from within the last 5 years. One has the origins of names and one tracks the trends of names. One is probably enough, but you know how it is. :)
4) Spelling Dictionary
I am God's little joke, a writer who cannot spell. I have a spelling dictionary on every desk. They are small, they are cheap, and they are much more trustworthy than spell check.
5) Grammar Girl's Guide: Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing
Great way to quickly look up the rules. Love it.
What are your "essentials"? There is always space on my desk for another book.
